Creating Your Path Forward
I can help when it seems impossible to choose a path forward. Change is inevitable, but uncovering and removing those blocks that are keeping my clients rooted in the present enables them to embrace the future and all of its possibilities.
Life is full of transitions, some planned, some unplanned. I work with my clients to examine what keeps them anchored in the present and partner with them to develop a plan to move forward into action. Navigating the path of change requires a clear understanding of ourselves and our values.
Once you choose a destination, you need a plan to get there. I partner with my clients to define goals, ensure that they conform to the client's values, and identify obstacles that can derail success in achieving those goals.
Many of these expressions are centuries old, but they describe just what you're feeling now. Negativity bias says that that you're going to come with five reasons why something won't work for every reason that it will. Clearly, history agrees.
Normality is a paved road: it's comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow. – Vincent van Gogh
What consumes your mind controls your life- Unknown
We have nothing to fear but fear itself -FDR 1932
Better the devil you know - An Irish proverb from the 1300s
Wash, rinse, repeat - Clairol Herbal Essences Shampoo, 1974
What if those expressions read more like these? (I think these folks may have had a coach.)
May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears. – Nelson Mandela
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you've imagined. - Thoreau
Oh, the things you can find, if you don't stay behind. – Dr. Seuss

Never let your emotions overpower your intelligence. – Drake
To live will be an awfully big adventure. – Peter Pan
Life changes take different forms. Some are planned, some are not. Being creatures of habit, our natural tendency is to continue to do what we have done in the past, even when it no longer serves us. Examples of life transitions include retirement, death of a family member, marriage, career change, divorce, empty nest, relocation, college graduation, and so many more. Change can be stressful, unpleasant, and sometimes unwanted. Examining the filters through which we are viewing the situation can allow us to uncover thoughts and fears that may not be valid. As life changes and we change with it, we need to update our thinking so that we can be very clear what serves us and what doesn't.
Coaching is not therapy and does not involve extensive time delving into the past. The concept of coaching is to co-create concrete goals and make incremental and sustainable progress to achieve them. These accomplishments are cumulative and result in forward movement, all of the client's choosing. The coach is there as a thinking partner to question and explore what might be causing the client to remain stuck. The coach helps the client to get out of his own way and begin living a new chapter of life.
Green Financial Group approached me about explaining how a life transition coach could help their clients planning for, or already in, retirement. It was an honor - and a lot of fun - to talk with Jeff and Lauren. Please go to The Green Zone podcast and listen to #24, or follow this link: https://www.greenfinancialgrp.com/podcasts
